Our Story

In the small town of Hopkinsville, Kentucky, Dr. Harry Joseph Dempsey purchased organic farmland to grow healthy food alternatives for local stores and distributors. After hearing rumors there was a cave somewhere on his property, he set out to discover its location and called the Kentucky Speleological Society to explore, document, and map it (the details of this adventure can be found on our blog). Now dubbed Bluegrass Cavern, this whale-mouth cave is in the top 2% of largest caves in Kentucky. Pretty cool, right? Cool, in many ways… in fact, the year-round temperature is a perfect 58 degrees!

The Bluegrass Cavern organic popcorn farm is located directly over its accompanying cave system, providing a natural canopy of protection for the variety of inhabitants thriving in the ecosystem below– meaning the pure farm does not use insecticides or pesticides that would otherwise harm the occupants below! There are all kinds of lifeforms and critters who call the cave home– from crayfish, to beetles, to crickets, to salamanders, and of course bats!
